Growing Curly Spider Plant in Small Water Jar

1. Selection of the Right “Spiderette”

How to find the right Spideretter or the healthy baby plant? To choose the right baby plant hanging from the mother plant’s runner, we need to look for the ‘nub’. That is, a baby plant that has small, brown bumps or tiny aerial roots at the base.

This kind of spiderette is perfect for growing in a planter like a small water jar. Now, further, we should use a clean, sharp pair of scissors to separate the baby plant from the long runner. Before cutting the spiderette, we should measure its length, as we need to leave at least 1 cm of the stem attached to help anchor it in the water jar.

2. Set Up Your Small Water Jar

Pick a jar with a narrow neck so the roots stay in water while the leaves remain dry. This balance is key. You can add pebbles at the bottom for support or stretch plastic wrap over the opening, poke a small hole, and gently place the plant through it.

Now, the most important part—the water. Always use distilled, filtered, or rainwater. Curly spider plants dislike fluoride and chlorine, and tap water can cause brown, crispy leaf tips over time. Think of good water as the plant’s lifeline.

3. Placement and Care

Placement and care of curly spider plant include three essential things any plant would need. Water level, light, and maintenance. Let’s understand each of these!

Water level: Water should neither be too high nor too low. The leaves should not get submerged in water, or else they will rot quickly. Be very careful while watering these plants.

Light: Keep the small water jar in bright, indirect sunlight (for instance, an east-facing windowsill) and avoid the direct afternoon sun. The morning sun will energize the plant, whereas the afternoon sun will cook the water as well as the roots of the plant.

Maintenance: To keep the plant fresh and oxygenated, we need to change the water in the jar every 5-7 days. In case the water has started appearing cloudy, change it immediately.

4. Nutrients for Long-Term Growth

Usually, we do not care much about the nutrients of the plants that grow in soil. If the plants are only dependent on water for their regular nutrients, then we need to be very careful. Missing even a single nutrient may cost the plant health.

Therefore, keep an eye on the quality and quantity of the fertilizers. Spring and summer are the best times to fertilize the curly spring plants. Avoid fertilizing the curly spider plant in winter and use only all-purpose houseplant fertilizers for the better health of the plant.

On the other hand, if you find algae growing in the jar, either change the jar immediately or clean it to keep the plant secure and healthy.

Caution!

Curly spider plants grow in a compact “cabbagy” manner. If the leaves start growing straight and lose their curl, that means the plant needs more light. You should immediately place it in a place where it gets more light and fresh air.
