Trying to make snake plant blooming is like trying to feed a toddler their veggies—next to impossible. But through years of experience, here is how I got my snake plant to bloom. Check it out, and you can do it too!

How I Got My Snake Plant to Bloom

Since it is a daunting task to get a snake plant bloom, I did quite a bit of research as well as experimented myself to get these perfect results:

1. Allow The Plant to Be Root-bound

Snake plants are usually forced to bloom when their roots don’t have enough space to grow or expand. Translocating a mature and large snake plant into a smaller pot or waiting for a snake plant to naturally become root-bound can eventually force it to produce flowers.

2. Exposure to Bright Sunlight

I found that placing my plant near an east-facing window helped the most. Major gardening websites and YouTube channels like Balconygardenweb also recommend tons of bright sunlight to obtain those rare white flowers. I was surprised at how much better my plant did with this change compared to other parts of the house.

3. Try Growing it Outside

I did this with a few of my snake plants just to see whether it is true and it surely is! I noticed the sunlight is much better here, so I moved my snake plants, which I initially bought to purify the indoor air, outside. They began blooming almost instantly.

4. Soil Requirement

I heard that snake plants aren’t picky about soil, but I found that adding a bit of perlite to regular potting mix significantly increased their blooming chances.

5. Water Requirement

Most people think that more frequent watering will persuade the snake plant to bloom. I was one of them until I realized that lower watering rates will help the plant grow faster! Surprising right? I thought so too, but this allowed the plant to be root-bound and in turn bloom quicker.

Bottom Note

Out of all the things I tried, putting my plant under stress, providing it less water, a lot of sunlight and forcing it to be root-bound, have got me those blooms that many crave for.

Note: Your snake plant will bloom only once a year, so don’t waste your energy if you have already gotten your flower and varieties such as Sansevieria trifasciata “’Hahnii Honey Bunny’” will NOT bloom.
