Mosquito Bits in Snake Plant Pots—Does It Stop Fungus Gnats Fast?

Information

Mosquito bits are an effective and safe way to remove fungus gnats in snake plant pots. Learn how they work to protect your houseplants.

Fungus gnats are among the most common pests of indoor plants, especially in pots with moist soil. Snake plants are low-maintenance, but they can still attract these gnats if the soil stays moist for too long. While the adult gnats are mostly harmless, their larvae live in the soil and feed on organic matter and plant roots, which can weaken plants over time. So, what do we do? Read ahead to find out!

What Are Mosquito Bits?

Mosquito bits are small granules that contain a naturally occurring bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI). This bacterium is widely used in pest control because it specifically targets the larvae of certain insects, including mosquitoes, fungus gnats, and black flies.

Mosquito bits are considered safe for humans, pets, and houseplants when used correctly. They do not harm plant roots and generally do not affect beneficial insects in indoor environments, making them a popular solution for controlling fungus gnats in potted plants.

How Do Mosquito Bits Work?

Mosquito bits work by targeting the larval stage of fungus gnats that live in the soil. When the larvae consume the BTI bacteria present in the soil, the bacteria disrupt their digestive systems. This causes the larvae to stop feeding and eventually die.

Because mosquito bits only affect larvae and not adult gnats, the results are not always immediate. Adult fungus gnats may continue flying around until they complete their life cycle, which typically lasts about a week. However, once the larvae are eliminated, the population gradually declines, and most plant owners notice a significant reduction in gnats within one to two weeks.

Repeated treatments help ensure that newly hatched larvae are also eliminated before they mature and continue the infestation.

How to Use Mosquito Bits in Snake Plant Pots

There are two common methods for applying mosquito bits to snake plant pots. The first method is sprinkling the granules directly on top of the soil. When you water the plant, the BTI bacteria are released into the soil and target the larvae.

The second and often more effective method is creating mosquito bits “tea.” Soak the granules in water for several hours and then use that water to water the plant. The BTI spreads evenly through the soil, reaching more larvae beneath the surface, but allow the top layer of soil to dry between waterings so that the environment becomes less suitable for fungus gnat reproduction.

Yellow sticky traps can capture adult gnats and prevent them from laying new eggs. Improving drainage and reducing excess moisture in the soil can also disrupt their life cycle. Some plant owners also remove the top layer of soil and replace it with fresh, dry potting mix. This can remove many eggs and larvae that may already be present near the surface.

Caring for snake plants is easy, and sometimes we just want to take one step further to protect them forever. Mosquito bits might help you in that. And if you try it, do let us know in the comments below how it turned out for your little snake plant.
