Lithops have at least 37 species and multiple varieties, and the discovery is still in process. They are succulents that can live for 40-50 years, and their unique appearance often confuses the observer. How? They come in different subtle colors with varying shapes, markings, and textures on the bodies. Their body shape and color make them similar to small pebbles, which is why this plant is called pebble plant. If looked at from above, the intricate markings on the leaves look like the convolutions of the brain. Plus, the green leaves fused together look like swollen lips.

General Caring Tips For These Succulents

How Much Water Should Be Given

To care for your lip-like succulents, water them only when the top inch of soil feels dry, especially in winter. Use well-draining soil in pots with holes; terra-cotta or ceramic pots are best for good airflow. Place them where they get 6 hours of indirect sunlight daily, avoiding extreme heat or cold. Indoors, put them near sunny windows; outdoors, provide partial shade.

In spring and summer, gradually acclimate indoor succulents to outdoor conditions for better air circulation, starting with shaded areas. Feed them diluted fertilizer every 2-4 weeks from spring to fall, but skip winter. Regularly check for pests like aphids or mealybugs; treat with diluted neem oil or isopropyl alcohol if needed.
