What does Ash Contain?
When the wood burns, most of the organic material is converted into gas, leaving behind mineral content. It contains significant amounts of potassium and calcium, with smaller amounts of phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and copper.

Adding Ashes to the Snake Plant
1. Correcting Acidic Soil
Snake plants are not particular about soil pH, but if the potting mix is too acidic, we sprinkle ash on top. It slightly raises the soil pH, making it neutral because the ash is alkaline.

You can opt for ash instead of your regular feed, as it acts as a mild, natural fertilizer. 3. Fungal Gnats & Pest Control
A small sprinkle of ash keeps the fungal gnats away! A thin dry layer on top of the soil irritates soft-bodied pests like aphids or larvae, keeping the soil surface dry. This gray powder, when circled around the snake plant, creates a boundary to keep larvae and insects away.
Some gardeners also use ash as a temporary drying agent on the soil surface because it helps absorb slight moisture, making the environment less attractive for fungus gnats.

7. When to Stop Using Ash?
Using ash in small amounts is not harmful, but if you overuse it, it becomes a major concern. You need to keep an eye out for early signs, such as pale leaves and slower growth. If the soil is becoming too compact or dry, stop using ash and flush it with plain water.
Another sign of excess ash is a white crust forming on the top of the soil, which usually indicates salt buildup. If this happens, it’s better to remove the top layer of soil and replace it with fresh potting mix.
