Did we not all wish for our ZZ plants to grow tall, upright, and unquestionably aesthetic? Perhaps it is still time to fix our routine!

ZZ plants are one of the most appealing and gorgeous kinds out there for every plant parent. Pinterest screams how minimal, clean, and upright it is. But in reality, a few mistakes can cost us our entire little plant. Because one morning we wake up and see the mood swings it has been through. But hey, relax, we have got something to fix it!
Tricks to Grow the Most Upright ZZ Plants
Now people believe different things, and that is true when it comes to saving our plants after their emotional rollercoaster. Water less, give bright, indirect light, rotate the plant, and more. While these words hold importance, they are just words until we actually know how much of each thing our ZZ plants need. So, to make your ZZ plants stand out and proud, follow these tricks.
1. Huge pots for the future? No.

Yes, we all believe that huge pots will help the roots expand and grow more freely. But we should know that ZZ plants can bend sideways if the pot is too large for their roots. ZZ plants like being a little crowded rather than being completely aloof.
A mildly rootbound ZZ plant grows tighter and more upright because the plant has less space to spread like a mat underground.
Another thing people often miss is heavy decorative pots without proper drainage. ZZ plants hate sitting in trapped moisture because it slowly weakens the roots and makes the stems flop instead of standing tall and proud.
2. Light and Light Everywhere!

“Rotate your ZZ plant uniformly.”
How many times have we all heard this by now? Plenty of times. But if your goal is to grow them upright, why will you rotate them? Why not try the opposite? Place the plant where light comes strongly from one direction only.
Let us break it down, since ZZ plants lean towards light, but when all the stems are competing towards the same light source, then there is more vertical growth, and we already have their stems a little bound together. So it is a win-win situation for us. But hey, it doesn’t mean harsh afternoon sun, follow the care routine as it is otherwise!
3. Stress it. Lightly, only.

Isn’t this so symbolic to humans? A little push and a little stress are all we need to grow ahead in life. Well, the more comfortable they are, the lazier they get, and in this case, they might grow wider too. So try to let the soil dry more deeply between waterings, reduce fertilizer frequency, and give brighter light.
But remember, there’s a thin line between “light stress” and neglect. Completely dry soil for weeks can make the stems wrinkle or lose strength, so the goal is balance, not punishment.
4. Crowd the Stems Together

We have spoken about this already, but pay attention to what we bring to the table now. Take some plant ties and gather a few stems together, and tie them for a couple of weeks. Not like a bouquet but as part of a simple upright routine.
With time, the new growth gets more vertical because the plant has adjusted itself to the tighter routine, and you have fulfilled your mission.
Some plant parents even use soft Velcro plant ties because they are gentle on the stems and easier to adjust as the plant grows taller.
5. Bright Light. Confused?

Low-light ZZ plants survive, but bright light can elevate the entire pattern. In darker rooms, the plant might reach out to the light to survive. But bright light, coming indirectly, helps your plant to grow naturally bushier, taller, stronger, and healthier.
And if you notice dusty leaves, wipe them gently with a soft cloth once in a while. Cleaner leaves absorb light better, which helps the plant stay healthier and more upright over time.
6. Don’t Water after New Growth

Okay, this might sound crazy to you, but hear us out. When new shoots emerge, many people think that they should water them right away to aid the growth. But overwatering during this phase can make the fresh stems turn softer and more bendable rather than stronger.
So maintain a normal watering routine and let it grow gradually while you expose it to light at different levels.
Honestly, there are no secrets to growing an upright ZZ plant. All it takes is to understand what they actually need. A little bit of everything is good, but know the amount they need. How is your ZZ plant growing? Do let us know in the comments below!
